Abstract

Objectives: To compare the incidence of paranasal sinus anatomic variations in the patient groups with and without the thickenings of sinus mucosa on the paranasal sinus tomography.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we evaluated 155 paranasal sinus tomographies, which had been taken at January and February 2003. We evaluated all tomographies for the mucosal thickenings of the paranasal sinuses. We separated the patients into two groups whether the thickenings of the mucosa was present or not. We evaluated these paranasal sinus tomographies for the existence of anatomic variations that were accessory maxillary sinus ostium, agger nasi cell, Haller cell, concha bullosa, and paradoxical middle concha, the deviation of the uncinate process, the pneumatization of the uncinate process, septum deviation and the pneumatization of the superior concha.

Results: Only the Haller cell and the medial deviation of the uncinate process were seen significantly more frequent in the group, which has not the thickening of the mucosa. The most frequently seen anatomic variation was agger nasi cell and the least frequently seen was the lateral deviation of the uncinate process in both groups.

Conclusion: The existence of mucosal thickening on the side of anatomic variation does not show that this variation is affective in the pathogenesis of sinusitis. But all anatomic variations and mucosal thickening on the tomographies should be evaluated individually for each patient.
