Abstract

Topical application of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on traumatic tympanic membrane (TM) perforations was studied in 14 guinea pigs. The animals were divided into two equal groups. In the first group, the growth factor was applied directly to the perforation in repeated three doses. Same dose was applied once in the second group. All the left ears were used as control groups. The tympanic membranes were assessed using light microscopy. In the study group, tympanic membranes were more thick and there were hyperplasia of the epithelial layers. There also were hyperplasia of the connective layers in which many fibroblasts and numerous vessels were found. These results demonstrate that bFGF enhance the repairment process of the epithelial and connective tissues. So, the atrophic healed tympanic membrane may be prevented by bFGF.
